Native plants have certain characteristics that make them the best option for your yard. They take less water, remain year after year, provide habitat and food for wildlife and have many more advantages.
One of the special characteristics of native plants are the root systems. The roots generally grow much deeper that those of non-native and many have long tap roots. A healthy root systems helps the plant survive longer periods of time with out rain. Another advantage of the deeper root systems is they divert excess rain water down instead of letting the rain water run off. As the water filters downward, impurities are removed. And it replenishes the underground water with cleaner filtered water.
Above ground natives seems to grow slowly when first planted. Actually, most of the initial growth is taking place underground as the root systems develop. Newly planted, these natives need extra water in the first year. Even in the second year native plants might seem to be growing slowly but they are still growing a stronger root system. By the third year, the natives begin to fill in above ground with lush leaves, fruits and blooms.
The best thing about native plants is that they will be happy in your yard. They will grow and thrive and you will be the proud owner of a uniquely Texas yard!
