Consulting and Design
Thornscapes’ plants are unique and we understand our plants and their requirements. Hedges are grown for maximum security by design. Understanding the growth patterns, growth rates, potential mature size and how maintenance affects security is our specialty. We highly recommend employing our services as the best way to ensure your security hedge is providing all the best advantages.
The site visit includes a visual site analysis, discussion of current site conditions and limitations, photographs, and a proposed scope of work. Verbal recommendations presented with rough sketches if needed. Preliminary plant selections and quantities noted. Plot plans, maps and any existing drawings should be presented for review before the meeting.
Thornscapes will coordinate with other professionals, installers, and contractors as needed to ensure the security needs are met. Our consultation fee includes overseeing plant installation to assure proper placement. Follow up visits will be scheduled as needed after project completion.
Design
Schematic drawings are available for an additional fee. A preliminary planting plan will be presented with notes about bed locations, demo and other site concerns. Location of selected plants will be noted to achieve maximum security. A final planting plan will be developed with the approval of all decision makers. Plant lists will be presented with plant cost estimates.
Overseeing plant placement to provide maximum security
Installation
Thornscapes will coordinate and oversee plant installations with your maintenance crew. Our goal is to provide maximum security by careful placement of the plants.
For best results, we recommend installing the plants between October and March when they are taking a break from the growing season. Many plants have tap roots and may not survive if planted during the heat of the summer.
The owner is responsible for irrigation of the newly installed plants. Once installed they will need extra water until they are established.
Thornscapes offers a 6 months warranty on a non thriving plant in a hedge of thriving plants, if the new owner maintains the new hedge as recommended. We will not replace plants if overwatered, underwatered, mistreated or destroyed by an act of god.
Maintaining the protective barrier as the plants mature over time
Thornscapes’ goal is to maintain the intended purpose of the security barrier. As shrubs and small trees age, the usefulness of the entire hedge as a barrier may diminish. Older plants may become taller and leggy and less thick at the bottom. Thornscapes uses several methods during regular maintenance to maintain a thick lush protective barrier.
Periodic trimming, staking, mulching, weeding and feeding of the aging hedge are needed to maintain the protective barrier. Thornscapes checks for plant health and well being and any problems that may be occurring during our maintenance calls. These might include water quantities and quality, weed control, varmint damage, insects, disease, and wind damage.
Thornscapes will document and address any issues we see with the owner. Our annual maintenance agreement includes replacement plants as needed to keep the barrier intact.
